The NAP lab has started Marquette’s first MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) banding station! This program, coordinated by the Institute for Bird Populations, is a continent-wide effort using bird banding to learn about the status of bird populations.
This is an exciting collaboration with the Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy to set up this long term monitoring site on their beautiful Vielmetti-Peters Reserve. So far, there has been lots of scouting, troubleshooting, training, and some fun birds that are gradually settling in on their territories, incubating, and feeding nestlings. We even caught our first fledgling of the season this week — a Wood Thrush (not what we expected this far north)!
This has been a great local opportunity for students in the NAP lab to develop skills in setting up and taking down mist nets, recording data, and getting comfortable with basic bird banding techniques!
(Note: This work is conducted under a federally authorized bird banding permit issued by the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory.)
